The Studio Environment

Private Lessons with Fun Incentives

Student lessons are 30 or 45 minutes in length as is normal in many studio settings.  However, 2 years ago, I was challenged by someone who said, “If you are still teaching piano the same way you were taught when you were young, something is wrong!”  That spurred me on to ask why, and to start reading about how private piano lessons were being taught TODAY!  I was greatly inspired by the fun, imaginative and motivated ideas that many teachers were using.

So I began implementing changes to my studio, both in how I taught, but also in how I approached piano teaching.  One of the big changes is implementing Incentive Programs each year that are designed to engage students more fully in the piano studies through rewards, competitions, etc.  It has been very successful and fun!  Along with that I have hopped into the technology world and am striving to learn as much as I can to implement these tools that enhance my students learning.  Don’t get me wrong.  The kids still have to practice.  Hard work and discipline in learning repertoire, developing technique is still important.  What has changed is using modern technology to help that process along.

Group Lessons

One of the extra perks at my studio is the opportunity to attend a group class 5 times during the year.. These are scheduled in addition to the regular private lessons, and the students who participate benefit in a variety of ways:
  • They learn new musical information and skills.
  • They develop camaraderie with other students in the studio who are working toward similar goals.
  • They are motivated to pursue a higher level of excellence in their practicing and playing.
  • They experience the enjoyment of ensemble music-making through duets and other collaborative efforts.
  • They have tons of fun working on projects and playing games together!
  • They develop a higher level of confidence and expertise performing in front of others.

Studio Technology
In this age of technology advance, its essential to know the tools available to musicians and to incorporate them in appropriate ways to build skills important to musicians today.  At Grace Notes Music Studio,  it is my goal to connect to technology today so we can incorporate it in our piano lessons for greater effectiveness and impact.  Here is what you can expect to find at my studio:

·         Digital keyboard with midi hook up
·         Headphones
·         Bluetooth speaker
·      iPad
·         Computer loaded with software programs to reinforce theory, ear training, sight reading, rhythm and composition
·         CDs and internet to increase listening skills
·         DVDs to learn more about composers and music history
·         MuseScore to facilitate budding composers
